I take a linguistics module as part of my degree, and this was on the reading list. I've never studied this kind of thing before, but this book is perfect for a novice like me, as it is written in simple language and every theoretical point is backed up with one or more examples so you know exactly what's going on! The chapters are quite short which means it doesn't feel like a battle (like some other linguistics books I've read). At the end of the book there are recommendations for further reading - all rated according to the level of expertise necessary to understand them, which was very useful.
