I loved this book. There are great parallels to the modern age. There is human strength, love, loyalty and steadfastness emanating from the Mr. Thornton and his mother. There is love, true conscience and kindness bound together with weak self centred-ness in the character of Mr. Hale. There are many interesting characters described as part of this tale which touches on industrial politics; it draws effective comparisons between the lives and attitudes of the more traditional rural "peasants" and the developing lifestyle and attitude of those born into the new industrial towns. I have returned to Jane Austen after many years, and am looking at the books in a completely new light. The central characters are compelling. In my school days I read with extreme impatience, yet now, I find myself drawn into the world at that time, and seeing just how insightful the author is in painting the "heroine", her family and friends. Once I got into the style, I found this a page turner and am definitely going to read more. Beautiful, quality writing, that is also easy to read!
