As other reviewers have said, this a well scripted, directed and wonderfully acted story. Maxine Peake simply excels in the title role. You don't have to be a student of the Regency era to enjoy it, nor to be intrigued by how she 'got away with it', nor do you need to be a passionate feminist, nor even a lesbian, to admire Miss Lister's magnificent courage and determination. But you do need to keep an eye on film's ability to seduce the viewer with as much ease as Miss Lister herself seems to have had at her fingertips. There are a lot of scare stories around about the risks of using third party rechargeable batteries. Some of them may be justified but I reasoned that if my brand new Canon digital was melted by this non-Canon battery, Amazon would have to stand by the replacement of both the battery and the camera.

But neither has been necessary. I've deliberately held on for a few months before writing this review, during which time I have recharged both this and the original Canon battery many times. Operationally, there is absolutely no difference between them.

Given the ridiculous prices equipment makers charge for spares, I can only give this alternative the best possible… Read more

This must be my third or fourth pocket Canon, used as a 'walkabout' camera for when I don't want the bulk, weight and inconvenience of an SLR: and it's easily my best Canon yet (well, ignoring an old, film, F1 SLR!).

All the positive comments made by other reviewers are true. The lens is quite sharp, images have good colour (better than that from my previous Canon pocket cameras), the image stabilisation is excellent and the flash, though it has a very limited range, delivers surprisingly good results and the zoom range is luxurious.
