I heard some of L'arpeggiata's music on Radio 3 and liked it enormously. They bring such passion and freshness to baroque music, as well as their musicianship. This collection of 6 of their albums represents great value for money - the only slight downside is lack of notes (eg words to the songs).

although the central characters these authors have created are likeable, the book is so clumsily written I could not finish it. But the plot is clunky, the back history set out in the novel is clunky AND naff, the quality of the writing is very poor. I accept that this book was not aimed at adult readers like me but I have read large quantities of other books for kids/teens/adults with magical settings and when they are well written, I am a big fan. Conclusion - if you read this you will see what a gulf there is between the quality of this book and the quality of the Harry Potter series

It's fine to have multiple plotlines in a complex novel but they need to be tied together in a credible way which makes us understand why the author has spent time developing each of them. Mankell spends a lot of time in the book developing plotlines early in the novel which he then cannot be bothered to resolve. He resorts to frankly… Read more
