I remember the first time I read this book - I was in High School and was at the stage where I was bored of the prescribed text and wanted something different so found this at my local library. I wasn't expecting much but I started reading it and not only couldn't I put it down, but I was heartbroken at various points. The author doesn't play on melodrama - everything is told without augmentation and Hollywood flair. The book isn't a sensationalised piece of fiction - this is real life and as you watch her meet, fall in love, lose and try to find out what happened to her husband you will become emotionally invested in this American woman who fell in love with a freedom fighter. 'Once upon a time a handsome, conceited prince lets his ego and his shallowness affect his judgement on the wrong person and a witch cursed him and turned him into a beast until he could get someone to look past the surface and love him for himself.'

Everyone knows the story but what is great about this is that it takes that simple concept and allows us to see it set in a modern time, and what exactly the 'Beast' goes through. This is well written, and will appeal to a broad range of people and it will be difficult to put down. If ever a movie was an example of what happens when a company has no idea how to market it it, Bandslam is it. The film garnered almost universal praise by critics, including being listed as a Critics Choice selection at the Critics Choice official site, and being listed as one of the top ten summer movies by Rotten Tomatoes yet, for some bizarre reason, Summit decided that the best way to market it was not as a quirky, clever, funny indie movie (or "an awkward, earnest, almost irresistible indie" as Variety put it) but instead a High School Musical Lite.
