Jonathan Livingston Seagull [DVD] [1973] DVD ~ James Franciscus
I read the book years ago when it was something of a cult. I'd also read about the making of the film - the thousands of hours of photography that were edited to fit the narrative and dialogue. Having now watched it, I can appreciate the difficulty of the project. The flying shots are brilliant - Jonathan trying to beat his own records and master the stunts. I also loved the shots of The Flock "fighting over garbage." Terrific photography! But the best thing about the movie is the sound track. Neil Diamond's beautiful songs are perfect for the inspirational message of the story. No doubt in my mind, the music makes it great.

Songs that take you back... Or, if you're too young to have heard them first time around, songs worth listening to. They have melodies you can hum or whistle. And that voice has depth and emotion. Two things seldom heard from today's "stars." Diamond still shines brightest.

Channel surfing on Spanish TV, I happened on an authentic view of Loch Ness (my home territory.) Found I was watching a movie and was riveted. A story of affection between boy and animal with a tensely dramatic ending. The scenery is superb. I'm amazed the Scottish Tourist Board hasn't snaffled this film for promotional purposes! (Only joking, but I felt such nostalgia.) I'll buy a copy for my grandkids who've never seen Scotland and are 'into' dinosaurs, anyway.
