This was the first book I have read about the opening up and the first attempts to climb Everest. I think that Wade Davis has for he moment made the subject his own with a book that I found difficult to put down. His characterisation of the men involved in all the three expeditions is masterful and I felt the narrative puts the reader in time and place alongside the expedition members.
Although I have given the book five stars I did feel that the extent of the author's involvement of he First World War is an unnecessary digression.
