Schalcken The Painter (BFI Flipside ) (DVD + Blu-r&hellip DVD ~ Jeremy Clyde
5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever, 30 Dec 2013
This BBC ghost story from 1979, based on a story by J Sheridan Le Fanu, has stood the test of time and remains a masterpiece of the genre. The settings and overall atmosphere of the production are excellent. Each scene resembles a 17th century Dutch painting and one feels transported back to that time.

As far as the additional features are concerned, the only one worth watching in my view is the 40 minute interview with the director and writer, Leslie Magahey, and the director of photography, John Hooper. The relevance of the other features is questionable.

2.0 out of 5 stars It isn't for me, 7 July 2013
I bought one of these but it didn't work properly. You are supposed to be able to increase the resistance by turning a knob but the resistance does not increase. The company did oblige me by sending a replacement free of charge but again it wasn't possible to increase the resistance. Judging by the customer reviews, it obviously works for some people but not for me.

This is a rather average 1970s update of a classic MR James ghost story. I enjoyed it when it was first broadcast but it hasn't really stood the test of time. Still, if you are into collecting 1970s BBC ghost stories, as I am, then you need to add this one to your collection. The best thing on the DVD is an extra feature which is a well presented biography of MR James.
