Yes, Iain Banks has managed eloquently to set out what more or less amounts to my liberal rationalist view of the world (minus the affairs with gangster's wives), in an amusing but nevertheless serious way and so saved me the trouble of doing it myself! This view will be shared by many educated Brits (who have hearteningly liberal politics). I (and Iain, plobly) hope the some right wingers will read it and convert. But of course I'm hopelessly naive. And by the way there's also a plot but this is rather unimportant, although it is sometimes enough to keep you turning the pages. This is Banks back on mainstream accesible form, Espedair Street, Crow Road style.
