This is a well researched book. Some of the accounts are truly moving and it gives a fantastic insight in to a subaltern's life in the trenches. For the most part these subalterns were a lion hearted bunch and there is no doubt that relative to their numbers they suffered disproportionate casualty rates because of their courage. My only criticism is that the author has a misty eyed view of these privately educated, wealthy and privileged young men. Whilst I don't doubt they suffered hardships, surely compared to their poorly paid, poorly equipped conscripts they had it easier? That doesn't seem to get a mention. Rudyard Kipling: The Complete Verse by Rudyard Kipling

I was new to Kipling but this is very accessible. All his poems are here along with a great introduction to the man. Well worth a look
