I'm one of those clueless Westerners, using only the ordinary dried noodles in the a stir fry with only half a clue what I'm doing. It acts as a great recipe book but also a useful window into different noodle types and their various properties. I had to stock up my larder with some ingredients I couldn't find in my local supermarket but once this was done they service many of the different recipes. There's plenty of choice from beef to pork, fish to vegetarian and we truly do go on a cross-Asian tour of noodle specialities.

This book is a compendium of articles where celebrities blur the lines between reality and their own universe. With martial artists, Hollywood stories, parochial English TV stars and muscle-bound wrestlers, the author picks stories from around the globe and shows just how susceptible fragile egos are to the onrush of fame, and how we are so willing to perpetuate their flamboyant lies.

The wry smile behind everything is acerbic yet somehow still grudgingly admires the overblown parade. This line is tiptoed over throughout the writing, and serves to make all of it compelling, enjoyable and fittingly, completely unbelievable.

From the moment I opened it I knew I was in for a treat. It's laid out like a scrapbook, with family photos and notes everywhere. It has the feeling of a real hand-me-down family cookbook. But make no mistake, this is real food presented in exciting and vibrant ways. Everything looks easy and fun and fits in so neatly with the modern way of life.

I've quickly established a few favourites: crispy roast cauliflower, leg of lamb with pasta, Indian pot-roast chicken... all of them are utterly divine and effortless. Go buy this book, read from it, cook from it and continue with joy in your heart.
