One can hardly call the life of Jorgen Jorgenson inspirational - here is a man, intelligent, adventurous, a born leader, yet time and time again chief architect of his own undoing. Bakewell's biography gives a fascinating insight into the life of a persona non grata: seen by many of his fellow Danes as a traitor for his empathy towards the British after their attack on Copenhagen, and hardly in favour in England due to his recurring problems with debt. Jorgenson is never egoistic. He works diligently, is trustworthy and faithful towards his employers, and yet so often ends up unpicking his carefully crafted reputation by indulging in drinking and gambling. As a casual frequenter of books on language and languages I found this book instructive and entertaining. It is well written and I lapped up the first chapters hungrily. Deutscher (or de Troy, as he likens himself in one chapter) guides the reader through the process of erosion, compression and recombination of words that constantly shapes and reshapes our language. I loved it. And then halfway through the book, just as I reached the five steps that possibly led to the formation of the 3-consonant templates of the arabic languages I hit the wall and never quite recovered after that.
