Life in Cartoon Motion ~ Mika

2.0 out of 5 stars Too happy, maybe?, 28 Jun 2007
These days, the music scene seems to be dominated by a few genres - indie, rap, emo and dance - so surely an injection of upbeat pop is what's needed? Mika succeeds, and perhaps a little too well.

Grace Kelly is an excellent pop song indeed, and one or two others on the album deserve a mention too. Relax, Take It Easy is an attempt to be slightly darker and it comes off quite well (even with the falsetto). Love Today isn't bad either. The bad thing is that this style of upbeat, lyrically simple pop was popular in the late 90s/early 00s, a la Vengaboys, S Club 7 etc. While Mika may not be in the same vain of teen oriented dance pop, he's cheesy and somewhat annoyingly happy… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful film, 28 July 2006
The "best films ever" lists often compiled nearly always contain the usual Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and so on, and while they are all undoubtedly excellent films, Walkabout is an easy challenge to them.

I can't help but feel some anger towards those who criticse it for lacking a storyline... to say that is to miss the point. The whole point is that it was never supposed to have a real plot. Some things will never be explained; why would the father drive his children into the outback to kill himself after attempting to shoot his own children, and why would Jenny Agutter's character wander even deeper into the desert with her young brother when they could have… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars ABBA Goes Disco, 24 Jan 2006
While ABBA's 6th studio album is widely regarded as a piece of disco, it doesn't contain the qualities of the disco music of the time, music such as The Bee Gees and Donna Summer. Instead, it's more of a collection of flowing, catchy tunes that only ABBA could have created, but with a pounding and more exotic sound. Despite being a Number 1 album, it contained no UK number 1 singles, although it did spawn 6 top tens (including the bonus tracks).
First up, "As Good As New" starts with a classical intro followed by the more typical disco sound. The structure of the song is excellent and Agnetha and Frida's vocals are, as ever, amazing. Definitely one of the missed… Read more
