Apart from one or two scenes looking quite attractive, being well lit and artfully composed, that's it! This is a complete turkey of a move with almost nothing to recommend it. The script is just embarrassing, the direction lumpen and clumsy, the acting appalling and the liberties that it takes with Modigliani's life and work unforgivable. It's all just so corny and clichéd I can't imagine how it ever got made.

I really don't know how I sat through it to the end.

Had it not been for the fact that I was reading this book for my village book group. I would never have persevered to the end, and now that I have got to the end I feel that I have wasted many hours of my life on this tedious ans spurious nonsense.
I have enjoyed and admired everything else that I have read by Faulks, notably Birdsong, but I found this very disappointing and frustrating.

When the two protagonists meet by chance in a resort on the Normandy coast (Deauville?), they sit up all night talking about their mutual interest in the developing treatments for mental illness and by the morning, Thomas Midwinter has become magically fluent in French! I would otherwise… Read more

I will leave descriptions of the plot to other reviewers who recount the narrative of this novel very fully and effectively.
Whilst I would certainly agree that this is a significant novel and a highly confident and engaging narrative, I would not, myself, go as far as giving it five stars for the simple fact that I found it just too long and the story telling, of what is essentially a fairly simple story, too drawn out and self indulgent.

I would contend that five stars are best reserved for truly epic books that have either stood the test of time already or show distinct signs of going to. If one thinks of some truly great American novels, and I would certainly add books… Read more
