Sophie Sweet, a young bisexual student arrives at Oxford, where her sexual adventures begin. Before she has her first affair, she is crowned Lesbian of the year. The next ten years of her life, she lives a lesbian lifestyle, before returning to her home in Cornwall post-PhD dissertation. There she finds life in a small village difficult as parochial attitudes constantly irk her.
Despite this, she meets a young man whose delicate attentions moves her back onto a path of heterosexuality. She eventually finds her place in the community because of her attempts at understanding and fitting in somewhat with the locals.
