2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 15 Aug 2014
Disappointing attempt at the traditional ghost story. Not much really happened until the end when everything seemed to happen. The characters were lacklustre - a suitable description for the book as a whole. Although Boyne tries to create an atmospheric ghost story, he ultimately fails. The atmosphere fell flat, and there were not enough chilling moments.

I'd recommend people read The Woman in Black for a proper haunted house, ghost story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, 26 May 2014
Quite possibly one of the worst books I've read this year. The same thing seems to happen again and again: kids run off, kids find something bad happen, kids get found or something happens to the family, police get involved, something else happens. And great swathes of the book could have been cut out as filler - pretty much nothing happened most of the time, only for the story to very quickly conclude. The characters were poorly drawn, there was no real terror or tension in the story, nothing was properly explained.

By the end I was skim reading. It's only 1.87 on the Kindle but I wouldn't even waste that on it. Terrible.

It was the second part that I felt the book go wrong:

Firstly - too much dialogue. Pages, and pages of dialogue. Dialogue at the expense of narrative, description, scene setting. Some of it utterly inane.

Secondly - the characters didn't grip me. A certain character was almost so nasty and detached it seemed to me that he was done that way to be the guy we all wanted to be… Read more
