This edition is the most properly commented one among all those that I have read. The text itself by Ghazali is short, elliptic, and contains technical terms that can be either modernised with arguable results or have to be commented on.

Ghazali's text is about his life story, though not a straightforward autobiography. It is a tour from science to science, what each science means, what it studies, what it "knows" and what it doesn't. Then after the tour among all sciences he arrives at that which transcends them.

One thing considered, this book is an excellent introduction into magic as I think magic should be: tightly coupled with thought-culture, emotional focus and ethics. The one thing to be considered is to do with the title. Even though it says "instruction manual" as part of the title and the topics of the chapters indicate a purely didactic emphasis, the format of the work is actually closer to autobiography. Don't get me wrong. There are excellent lessons about psychic events and cultivation of mental ethical focus there, it's just that they are not arranged as neatly as the topics of the chapters imply.
