Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel
Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel
I found this book thought provoking and many of Perel's ways of looking at sex in a long term relationship made sense. She takes an open minded and pragmatic view, encouraging tolerance and empathy. I was not quite so convinced by some of her remedies - although they are often creative. In terms of thinking practically about what to do to improve the sexual relationship I've probably found David Shnark's books to be more helpful. I'm glad I read this book as well though as it did provide some interesting insights and is written in an engaging way, without the religious overtones which I found occasionally outputting in Schnarks work.

Well-researched context (corruption in post-invasion Iraq) makes this an interesting and quite political read, but there's also plenty of humour and action.

There are no big story lines, just beautifully drawn characters, vividly described landscapes and the rhythms of daily life on a Scandinavian island where a family stay in their summer house. I found the relationship between the little girl and her grandmother enormously touching and totally believable.
