Boys Don't Cry [DVD] [2000] DVD ~ Hilary Swank
Boys Don't Cry [DVD] [2000] DVD ~ Hilary Swank

I din't cry but I found this film quite raw with a stunning performance by Hilary Swank. Slightly dysfunctional collection of individuals and the plot is very loosely and a little naively structured. Will not reveal the end which in some senses was unexpected. Worth watching but I wonder if you would want to view it again. Would it achieve the same impact?
Notwithstanding: Stories from an English Village by Louis de Bernieres
4.0 out of 5 stars Village Life..., 15 July 2012
Not a heavy read but well worthwhile investing time and savouring this collection of miniature descriptions of village inhabitants. Idiosyncratic characters, some sterotypes but cleverly interwoven into the short stories so that there are links between each of the tales. Good descriptive writing with wry observations. Very enjoyable and absorbing.

A feel-good movie, with some funny moments. Lots of stereo-typical characters and homophobic reactions and "jokes" - but treated in a comedic and "laugh-at-yourself" way. The theme of "coming-out" follows a fairly well-worn path but there are plenty of diverting characters and unexpected moments. The ending is completely predictable but it shouldn't be any other way in such a genre! You do not have to like or follow football to enjoy this. The opening scenes are completely unexpected and I suppose quite irrelevant but delightfully playful and reflects the closeness of the lead sibling characters.
