In My Own Words:
My two great loves are books and music. Seriously, I read too much, it is probably unhealthy.

Books (real books, printed, hardbacks and paperbacks) and… Kindle (for those heavy tomes), music (i.e. listening to it, sadly, not creating), googling things, travelling, cooking, exotic locations, reading, doing arty things (arts and crafts and goin… Read more

The Wedding Weekend [DVD] [2007] DVD ~ David Alan Basche

I have no idea how "The Wedding Weekend" crept into my rental list. But I suffered through it.

The film centres around a group of a cappella singers from college. Fifteen years after their graduation, a group of thirty-somethings reunites for a friend's wedding. Quickly and surely, we find out how unhappy their lives really are, and only music can save [and saves] them.

Sorry for the sarcastic review, the film is not the worst I've ever seen, but it's a mediocre attempt at comedy. Forgettable, not really necessary and quite boring. "The Wedding Weekend" is full of dull chat. The actors are evidently trying their best, but the script fails them miserably.
The Shadows (Books of Elsewhere) by Jacqueline West

"The Shadows" was read within 2 day by one 9 y.o., which is yet unprecedented. I read it as well, when I had a chance (and as it was recommended by the said 9 y.o. as a scary page-turner, I was even quoted some jokes from there!). What can I say? Obviously written for pre-teens, this is cleverly done story of one girl exploring her new [spooky] house and making unlikely friends. The narrative is very rich and fantastically describes the old creaky mansion and spooky paintings with something alive and moving within them!

For a 8-12 year old, I think this will be a treat and I would definitely check other books in the series.

P.S. It reminded me of… Read more
Mr Selfridge - Series 1-2 [DVD] [2014] DVD ~ Jeremy Piven

I was not at all sure about Mr Selfridge the series (I mean, what can it be about, I thought, it's like sucking a story out of a thumb!). BUT, by episode three of the first season I was fully converted (you have to live through the longish pilot episode). I was addicted to the story of ostentatious and flamboyant Harry Gordon Selfridge (excellently cast Jeremy Piven), the American brain and power behind the top London department store Selfridge & Co. He is a force of nature, ready to charm you off your feet! First season opens with Mr Selfridge planning to open the store while his business partners pull out, and the season close with Selfridges the store blooming and Selfridges the flashy… Read more
