This a beautiful book of photographs, all in black and white, taken in South Uist in the early 1950's. The views of the land and sea are great but even better are the portraits of the ordinary folk who live there. I particularly like the photographer's technique of just standing the subject against a stone wall and taking the photograph. This looks so nice and straight forward and although I am sure that this method is far from simple it gives that impression and allows one to concentrate on the person in focus. The photos of Mrs. Kate Steel towards the front of the book, and especially the one of her hands on her lap, are worth the price of this book on their own!!
