Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende
Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende
5.0 out of 5 stars A gem, 16 Jun 2014
A teenage girl confronts grief and copes badly. After going very far off the rails, she's rescued by kindly family and friends, and sent away to hide from the consequences of her mistakes on a remote island in Chiloe. The descriptions of the myths, landscapes and locals are wonderful and I was very impressed too by Allende's ability to get inside the mind of this girl. Troubled teens/twenties are an often-misunderstood group but she seemed like a real person and was good company despite her difficulties. And, in quite a short book, an amazing amount of interesting story happens - the past in Chile, the present in US, and the complex loves and troubles within a quirky family.

A big fan of Gaiman from Sandman to Graveyard Book, I was left slightly cold by this one. This isn't quite a book for kids… and nor does it quite work (for me) at adult level. The 'action sequences' seem protracted and depend too much on eliciting sympathy for the downtrodden protagonist. And the whole (and this really is in contrast to his other work such as the Graveyard book and Anansi boys) seems to take itself all a bit too seriously.

However these are grumbles, because anything by Gaiman is a pacy, interesting, colourful read and this is no exception.
Klarstein "Vita Blue" Design Cordless Glass Kettle&hellip by Klarstein

Pretty glass kettle, easy to pick up and fill, nice blue light. Boils quickly. My previous kettle was transparent plastic and this looks a lot better.

It comes with a european plug but also with an adaptor. We just changed it to a UK plug. So be prepared for this (not really a problem in my view).

I've just started using the kettle so can't comment on its powers of endurance!
