I've been a fan of the Pern books for a very long time, and I think it's fair to say that I love them.
I didn't love this one.
It seemed really rushed and incomplete, more of a proposal for a much bigger book, or even a couple of books. There's too much in there, but there isn't enough explanation, or depth of exploration of the themes and ideas, and it comes across and confusing. The frustrating thing is that there are some really nice ideas in here - the Sky Wing, the green queens, the disagreement between riders/lovers, but they weren't explored. There were too many characters with names starting with J; and I didn't feel as if I knew these characters very well at all… Read more

I'm a big fan of Pratchett and have been for a long time, and I have to wonder if this book was written by somebody else.
It had remarkably few of the hallmarks of a Pratchett book - not very funny, hardly any fantasy, and (as another reviewer has said) very easy to put down - in fact, it was a bit of an effort to pick up again. Slow plot (what there was of it), muddled and confusing, and generally not very satisfying. Not one I will be reading again I think - which is a shame, because Going Postal was really quite good. (Please don't let there be a third book about the tax system...)
