On the Eve: A Novel by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev
4.0 out of 5 stars True Love, 19 July 2014
This is a short novel about true love. At the centre of the story are three young men of different characters and temperaments, all in love with the same girl. At the beginning she is confused and unsure of what love really is, until she falls headlong for the one who is most unsuited on the exterior but who reciprocates in the same measure. It meant she had to follow his cause and desert everything and everyone for his sake. Tragically he did not survive, and Elena took the unusual and painful step not to return to her previous life. The story evolves against the background of the Crimean and the East European conflicts.

It is a beautiful novel to read, and the characters stand… Read more
The Hidden Masterpiece by Honoré de Balzac
The Hidden Masterpiece by Honoré de Balzac

Against the wishes of his mother who knew too well the ways of the world, he was introduced by his father into Paris society hoping this would advance his son's career and social standing. Edouard falls in love with an aristocratic girl who reciprocated his love. But social prejudice in those days was such that the obstacles were insurmountable, with a tragic end to their love story.

Ourika was brought to France by white settlers in the… Read more
