I have really enjoyed this early Maxwell which shows the start of his relationship with Jackie. Ihave read a lot of the later books bt seem to have missed this one so it was interesting to see how hings had worked out.

This novel is set in the years leading up to America entering the First World War. Although it isn't mentioned much at first you get the impression of it brooding over the people. The main character is a young minister who has risen quickly up the hierachy of his church, he is also trying to live up to his grandfathers high standards. The bishop of the title. He has however fallen in love with a girl who although she marries him finds it very hard to change her hedonistic ways to fit in with the slightly puritanical church. The characters are believable and there trials and tribulations believable. The book ends with him realising that to live up to his high ideals he will have to join up… Read more

I like his sense of humour, there is a quirky sense to the novels. The characters are believable and you become interested in what happens to them. There is always a good story which is neatly tied up so you aren't left guessing.
