Butterfly ~ Mariah Carey
Butterfly ~ Mariah Carey
Butterfly was and is the pinnacle moment of Mariah Carey's career. Despite returning in 2005 with the hugely successful and brilliant 'The Emancipation of Mimi' it is highly unlikely that she will ever produce an album of this standard again. The most important thing with this collection is that it works so much better collectively than as singles. The album flows seemlessly from track with lyrics that are her most personal and poignant. This album was written after she divorced with Tommy Motola which has resulted in music directly effected by her pain. The top 5 tracks are:

This album is so good and effective because of it's simplicity. Moreover it has some of the best lyrics written today by a singer songwriter. The lyrics are a key element of this music and without them the songs would be nowhere as good. I think that this album is similar to Damien Rice's O and anyone who enjoyed that would like this. However while it has some comparisons such as the dependency on acoutic guitar it is also very different. The music on this album can be quite sobering as well as touching. The highlights are the slowest songs on the album - Lua and First Day Of My Life.

This album also has a realism about it with it taking into account real feelings and emotions… Read more
