I really want to give this film 4 stars but I just can't.

The majority of this film is excellent. Reasonably smarty and witty dialogue combined with a tense spy thriller the film is hugely remeniscent of a bygone era of film making. I could easily imagine Cary Grant in North by Northwest mode slipping into Depp's role.

Living up to its name, it is full of glorious shots of venice - deep blue water, wonderful cloudless skies and beautiful hotels for the rich and famous and despite the tensions of the plot and dialogue, this does have the effect of keeping the tone a bit too light hearted.

The real downfall of this film though is the ending. The last five… Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars goosebumps, 3 May 2011
As other people have pointed out, this film is a bit of a "slow burner". That doesn't stop it from being a tense and powerful political thriller.

The story is a little tough to follow sometimes but the central characters are strong enough to carry it through and provoke a real reacition from the viewer. I found the slower pace of the film actually a bit of a relief following a few years of non stop action in virtually every film produced. Here, the focus is on people and communication.

It is important to remember that this is a true story. The highlight for me is the final scene which gave my actual goosebumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars best film in years, 28 April 2011
Simply put, I believe this is one of the finest films I have seen in the last ten years. From incredible performances across the board to an amazing script that harks back to a form of dialogue in films that seems to have passed - intelligent, witty and natural. Not merely exposition but dialogue and character interaction as a feature itself. Although the direction feels old fashioned, it never feels old - this is a modern film full of real talent and emotional impact.

Accompanied by a spectacular soundtrack this film is just all round brilliant.

I want to make this 6 stars!
