Thraxas is one of my favourite fantasy characters. He's large, very fond of beer, and often in trouble when his investigations go wrong. I read this when it first came out and I'm a fan of the whole series.

Annie Hall [DVD] [1977] DVD ~ Woody Allen
Woody Allen has made a lot of good films, and I think this is his best. The neurotic Allen and the rather eccentric Diane Keaton make for a slightly odd pairing, but a convincing one. Some of the best moments in their romance happen at unexpected moments, and there's a lot of charm in their romance. That, plus Woody Allen's stream of comedy, makes for a really excellent film.

A very funny book, and also a great portrait of Britain at the end of the 50s. Billy Liar, employed in a funeral parlour five and a half days a week, stuck in a small town he finds frustrating, struggles with his mundane life, most often choosing to disappear into his own fantasy world. Billy's fantasy world is very funny indeed, and while he comes out on top in his imagination, he always never does in real life. Keith Waterhouse's writing in this book is fresh, sharp and effective, and still deserves to be read.
