When I was deciding which post golden era Kinks albums to keep (i.e. those albums after Lola vs Powerman) back in the 90's, Soap Opera was the only one that stood out in my mind. I recall that at the time of its release it went completely under the radar and was, when it was noticed, thought of as just another misconceived concept album by a once great songwriter. As far as I was concerned it was the best thing they'd done in a while and, I would argue, subsequently. The songs were catchy, it had humor and unlike their other concept albums of the period it worked. With such a suburban classics as You Make It All Worthwhile its a wonder it hasn't cult status. I'll have pudding and custard!
