I could not say "I enjoyed it" but it did give me an understanding of what it must have been like to have been caught up in such a cataclysmic event as a tsunami. The film drew you in emotionally and although the 'blurb' told you it was a triumph of human courage & love you are never quite sure which members of the family are going to come through and in what condition.
The casting is very good and even the children put in believable performances. Ewan Macgregor was as good as ever but the star was Naomi Watts and the cameraman.

To most on this side of the pond the machinations of the American political process is of little interest. When buying this product I expected the focus to be on the man and his place in the American Civil War but little of the man came through apart from his love of anectdote and persistant homely manipulative style of getting his way. I did not feel I knew the man or his times any better than before. Much of the film was a repeat of the struggle for legislation depicted, far better, in "John Adams".
It was spoilt by the liberal left ethos of today cast over it, the darkness of the filming, the extremely poor sound track, and a virtually characterless Lincoln.

If you are a fan of Morse then this is a fascinating series of the man as a young man. To depict the development of a much loved crusty egocentric in his formative years and his hates and loves is a challenge. The well known finished product puts limitations on the writers and directors which they cope with well.
It is family entertainment which satisfies. The sound is good, the characters are well developed and I hope there will be as many episodes forthcoming as there was of Morse (Senior).
