Anyone who is interested in China should read this book - and so should those who are not. Through the novel we live the lives of its characters across the generations, living their hopes, fears and aspirations as they experience the roller coaster of Chinese history. A great story, well told.
This is one of those rare books that stays with you long after you have read it. Each chapter recounts a true story involving the extraordinary working lives of ordinary police officers. The straightforward but honest way in which they are told is both heartwarming and humbling, with a lovely touch of humour at times too. You really feel you get to know the people involved, the situation they found themselves in and how they felt, both at the time and since. A really good read!
