Handel: L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato ~ George Frideric Handel

Little by little, L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato (1740) is gaining recognition as one of Handel's masterpieces. The idea of interleaving passages from John Milton's twinned poems delineating two extremes of human temperament clearly inspired the composer; the actual literary work was done initially by James Harris and amended by Charles Jennens. The composer also had Jennens pen a final section praising the integration of "Mirth" and "Melancholy" into "Moderation."

Mélodies Sur Des Počmes Des Počtes Divers ~ Poulenc
This is the third and final volume of baritone Holger Falk and pianist Alessandro Zuppardo's survey of the songs of Francis Poulenc appropriate to a male voice. Vol. 1 was devoted to Poulenc's settings of poems by Guillaume Apollinaire, Vol. 2 to his other central artistic collaboration, with Paul Eluard (plus four songs on texts by Louise de Vilmorin); Vol. 3 covers "various poets," ancient and modern.

Back in 1987, pianist Graham Johnson & soprano Felicity Lott collaborated on one of the best single-disc surveys of Poulenc's songs, Voyage à Paris. Now Johnson crowns the Hyperion French Song Edition with this 4CD set of the complete songs, with Lott contributing a delightful cameo in the 4 Songs for Children. It's a major accomplishment, prepared & executed with great care & love at every stage.

Even if you already have one or more of the earlier complete surveys, if you love this marvelous repertoire you should at some point consider adding this box to your collection. The key reasons are Graham Johnson & Graham Johnson: that is, the superb pianism & the fantastic… Read more
