When I contacted ASUS customer services to request a replacement unit this was their response. Simply acknowledging that they supply faulty equipment and are not interested in correcting this is shocking:

I have read and understood the comments you have made in your mails. Unfortunately we cannot help you further with the supplying the power adaptor nor the UK plug.
Please be informed that we can only advise you to return to the reseller or to buy the adapter via Asus parts as these are not universal but specially build for Asus.
