Life of the Beloved and Our Greatest Gift by Henri Nouwen
I have read several of Nouwens books and I think he is a fantastic author.

I really enjoyed 'life of the beloved' but ended up getting another addition of the book on amazon because the print quality of this one is just awful. There is another much better quality addition on amazon (which does not have Our Greatest Gift) for more or less the same price which was absolutely fine.

If i were to recommend one book by John Main this would be it. John Mains teaching on how to meditate is simple (in the best sense of the word) but has great depth and clarity. This is a book that I keep on coming back to. For all those interested in Christian contemplative prayer I would also highly recommend reading Martin Laird 'Into the Silent Land'.

Martin Laird in particular has set a very high bench-mark with 'into the silent land'. This is a very different kind of book, at least in style. The charpters are short, just a couple of pages long. Each chapter addresses a different aspect or topic of contemplation. It's very simply written and easy to read. Consoling with gentle reflections and guidance on the practice of contemplation - perfect for someone new to contemplation or someone who has been practicing many years. I particularly enjoyed learning more about Saint Augustines teachings on contemplation. A lovely book… Read more
