Martin Eden by Jack London
Martin Eden by Jack London
5.0 out of 5 stars a treasure of a book, 28 May 2014
This book came to my attention when I watched an interview with the late actor Peter O'Toole who referred to it when asked about his favourite literature.
I don't want to post any major spoilers so I'll just say that it's about an idealistic young man's journey from relative poverty and early dreams of having and becoming more to realising some of his aspirations and learning that it comes at a cost. Not only is the story of Martin Eden superficially enjoyable to read but there's also a great thread of wisdom and insight into life running through it. I admire London's style of writing and the fact that he stretches one's vocabulary a bit by adding some variety in words.

Hill [DVD] [1965] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] DVD ~ Sean Connery
5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Film, 28 May 2014
The Hill is my favourite Sean Connery film. It's about real-world hardship and corruption. In this instance it's set against a background of draconian military life for soldiers. The acting, props and locations used are very convincing and raw.
It is also another great film that has been quite difficult to get hold of a copy of for some reason. Something as brilliant as this should be easy to see for people who want to watch it.

This was not easy to listen to because of the poor sound mix. The music itself is just okay, I think, but unfortunately it also drowns out some of the dialogue, which after-all is the point of listening in the first place. I struggled to make out what was being said in a lot of places (and I have good hearing too) so not sure I would recommend it as is and at the price.
