If you need a good low cost soldering iron for DIY electronics then get an Antex.
I found that quite a few people recommended these Antex irons for DIY electronics, including the BT engineer who was here recently (he saw one of my DIY circuits on my desk and we got into a discussion about soldering irons).
I have used it only once so far and it is very pleasant to use, the silicone cable on this one is a very nice extra. The silicone cable makes moving the iron around very easy since it doesn't have the weight of a PVC flex dragging behind it. One thing to note here, the cable that came with mine is only 1.3m long rather than the 1.5m quoted.
I got this for use with a mini-radio project I recently put together and whilst it works as intended, it is a bit too large to fit into my ear so I can't really leave it in without it falling out.
I would say buy if you only want to use the crystal earpiece for testing (seeing if there is a weak signal there etc), but not this particular one for long duration use. Unless you have huge ear canals.
