I found this very hard to follow at the beginning as it introduced the two pairs of girls. In both the historical and modern setting, one girl is from a rich family whose fortune is lost, and one is from a poor family who rises in society (due to the quality of her bound feet securing her a good marriage in the past, and her academic skills and hard work in the present). As the movie flips between past and present, rich and poor, different areas of China in the past, child and adult actors, it's hard to know what's going on.

After reading the free sample I was hooked and bought the whole thing. There are lots of twists and turns and, unusually for me, I guessed nearly all of them. However, one was unexpected and completely heartbreaking and I nearly stopped reading, but I continued, hoping for an overall happy ending (there is!). Another had been gently hinted at for the whole book yet it took me completely by surprise.

There are three main POV characters who are all very likeable despite their failings. In the early book it seems hard to keep track of all the different characters but you soon realise that eg one character's uncle is the same as another's brother and so on so it isn't very confusing… Read more

The recipes themselves are great. There are some amazing flavour combinations, from the familiar with a twist to entirely novel. The ingredients are generally easy to source or substitute as long as you are familiar with US terms for some foods. The main problem I have is that a lot of the recipes are quite chili-reliant, and I don't like all my food to taste of chili. If you leave out the chili, then double the rest of the herbs, spices and other flavourings, and it's delicious (just leaving out the chili renders them a little bland).

If you are not looking to lose weight, I would also recommend doubling the oil in many of the recipes, after you've made them once with the stated… Read more
