"The Way Ahead"

David Niven stars as the young officer, with William Hartnell as his Sergeant, they are tasked with training a group of reluctant recruits from typically diverse backgrounds and melding them into a fighting unit. The regiment is fictitious of course, but the young officer's pride in it is quite typical for the Army. Having decided that the young officer and his 'tyrant sergeant' aren't so bad after all, they find themselves headed out to fight Rommel's Army in North Africa. Intended as a morale booster film during WWII the theme is necessarily upbeat, though not as gung-ho as American films of the period in fact they get positively homesick listening to the radio… Read more

"They were not divided"
Released in 1950, this is a typical British view of the war from after the event. Not glamourising war, with no need to sell War Bonds it tells the true story of recruits to the Guards Armoured Division. For those of an age the remember National Service will appreciate the training period, with 'Trained Solder' who shows the tips on how to clean your kit etc. and the fearsome RSM who, if he can't find another infraction will tell the squaddie to get his hair cut (again!). The story leads on to Normandy and the difficult single road attack of Market Garden through to its tragic ending.
