I have been practising (or at least trying) Buddhist teachings for over 20 years, have used therapy to explore my self/my attachments and have explored a number of different personal growth tools and techniques during that time. I think it is fair to say that Pema Chodron's book is the first one that I have ever read that is written in plain English without excessive or heavy reference to Buddhist theory/terms and written so clearly from personal knowledge and experience rather than being couched in theoretical interpretation. I'll begin by saying that I am completely new to this band. There are some reviews here from long-term fans and I just wanted to add the perspective of someone hearing the album without any previous experience.
In short, I think the album is outstandingly good. It puts me in mind of other great song-driven bands such as Tears for Fears or World Party or the less well-known Nada Surf. I think the band have created a very interesting mix of get-up-and-dance jangly pop/rock songs and some more thoughtful/experimental stuff with indie-leanings as well. As a new user of Reason 4 I have found this book to be very helpful in finding my around. It takes the reader step-by-step through all of the tools available within Reason with lots of examples to underline the information being provided. Where I think the book falls short (and hence the 4 stars) is that it comes from what I call the Fisher-Price school of writing, that is it explains what happens if you push a particular button or control, but not necessarily why. I appreciate that this might make the book huge (it's already over 600 pages), but sometimes it's nice to know why a particular thing happens as well as just knowing that it does.
