Edwardian Fashion (Shire Library) by Daniel Milford-Cottam
Edwardian Fashion (Shire Library) by Daniel Milford-Cottam
I must declare an interest. I am related to the author.
I am not familiar with the Shire Library of specialist non fiction titles but this is a beautifully produced volume.
The illustrations are charming and very well chosen to complement the text which is lucid, witty and very informative about the social changes following Victoria's death and the new trends in fashion. By placing fashion in its broader social context the author has made a book that is interesting to the general reader , as well those who are dedicated followers of fashion. It is both erudite and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars An astounding book!, 2 Feb 2014
Richard Powers writes with unequalled passion about music. Orfeo, like his earlier work, "the Time of our Singing", explores the complexities of musical experience and the motivations that compel humans to practise such a demanding and ephemeral art. Many passages in Orfeo held me so enthralled that they had to be bookmarked and reread. His exquisite evocation of Kindertotenlieder and the story of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" are extraordinary and very moving. The scope and reach of this novel is very ambitious. Powers wants to embrace and make meaningful connections between Music, Language and Science. This is no arid, intellectual exercise but something… Read more
Die Winterreise D. 911 ~ Yi-Tzu Pan
Die Winterreise D. 911 ~ Yi-Tzu Pan
5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording, 12 Jan 2014
This cello transcription is a great success, played with such eloquence and and sensitivity by Yi -tzu Pan.
Knowing the song cycle, I can imagine the texts even when sung by a cello. The piano playing is also very fine.
The recording captures every nuance of her expressive playing and the balance is ideal. Such wonderful music loses nothing when played like this with a bow that can breathe the music and a player with such broad palette of sound.
Mischa Maisky and Anne Gastinel have also recorded lieder on the cello. Winterreise is a wonderful addition to the cello repertoire and I hope it will be adopted by other cellists.
