CUT DEAD: A DI Charlotte Savage Novel by Mark Sennen

Series about the same detective either get better or worse. The Charlotte Savage series just gets better and better. The characters are developing nicely and you only have to read Mark Sennen's blog of 19th December last to see why. He relates an imaginary visit to Major Crimes where he meets some of the Unit. They are obviously real to him and this therefore is the extent to which he can and does put the characters across in the books.

Devon is, as usual, wet, windy, and sometimes sunny, but written about always with detailed knowledge and love.

As to the plot, it is up to Mark's usual meticulous plotting (!). I won't give anything away, the clue is in the title… Read more
Western Approaches (Jimmy Suttle Book 1) by Graham Hurley
4.0 out of 5 stars A good start., 5 Jan 2014
The first of the non-Faraday books. As a fan of Graham Hurley and that series, I think it is a good start. I did find it a bit hard to get into, but after a slightly pedestrian beginning, it doesn't disappoint. Certainly enough left in the balance of the lives of the characters to have me looking forward to reading the next one. I know both Portsmouth and Devon and its always nice to read an author who gets his facts right, makes you confident of the bits you don't know about.
The Golden Ocean by Patrick O'Brian
The Golden Ocean by Patrick O'Brian
3.0 out of 5 stars Okay,but ......., 5 Jan 2014
The Golden Ocean is OK, but probably if you haven't read the Aubrey/Maturin series. It is very much a first novel and lacks the superb polished quality of those books. As another reviewer said, you can see the precurser of the series in this book. Personally, although there is nothing wrong with it, I have preferred to go back and re-read the Aubrey books. However, I shall at some point try some of O'Brian's other works, simply because I enjoy his literacy, detail and style.
