Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth
4.0 out of 5 stars A symphony of words, 17 Sep 2014
A work of formidable intelligence and, as with all his books, beautifully written. He has a huge vocabulary - must be up there with the greatest wordsmiths. A majestic symphony of words creates a novel which is informative, enriching, entertaining and lingering.
Portnoy's Complaint (Vintage Blue) by Philip Roth
5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 17 Sep 2014
Superbly written, hilarious and scathing commentary on (among other things) growing up, sex (a lot of sex, so not for the easily offended), and race - all stripped bare in a from-the-hip monologue of extraordinary power. One of the very best books that I have ever read. Presumably this book is the "Carnovsky" of Roth's " Zuckerman" series.
Sabbath's Theater by Philip Roth
Sabbath's Theater by Philip Roth
Through the eyes and thoughts of the protagonist, Micky Sabbath, Philip Roth opens a dark box for us to peer into, if we dare, where we can examine some as yet to be discovered, or acknowledged, layers of ourselves. This dark, serious, comic book uses intelligent and satisfying prose to suggest some of the less obvious, and often disturbing, truths about human existence.
