The author bares his lyrical soul to reflect on tragedy, loss and, most of all, confusion in this short work. This confusion is of the class that shocks when other people reveal they aren't who the narrator presumed they were and, in so doing, instill a doubt in the narrator that he isn't really who he presumed he was either.
I enjoy this style of writing: simple enough, but complete with the whispered afterthought that something of significance ebbs below the surface, or on the next page.
A quick read, but satisfying
The Poem-Skull (The Invocations Book 1) by J.M. Hushour
Leave any literary baggage at the door and submit to this storm of word and image. There is a plot (read the blurb) but don't worry about such trivial matters - just immerse your head in the language:

Dirty Snow (New York Review Books Classics) by Georges Simenon
More Raskolnikov than Maigret, Simenon's character must sate his urge to kill a man - because he needs to know what it feels like:
"For Frank it was a question of killing his first man and breaking in Kromer's Swedish knife.
Nothing more.
The only problem was that he would have to stand there in the crusted snow ... and feel his right hand slowly stiffening in the cold. He had decided not to wear a glove."
