1.0 out of 5 stars A horror of a book, 24 Mar 2004
To be honest theres not much to this guide, all it does is chronicle each film who directed etc etc no snippits of infomation no insight nothing nada squat zilch, a much better guide on this subject would be Hammer studios (wayne kinsey). So do you self a favour and keep hold of your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars a gripping yarn, 20 Mar 2004
In the land of white death chronicles the escape of Valerian Albanov from his icebound ship (the saint anna) his trek across the frozen wastes of siberia, recreated from his journal his writing style translates very well into english with none of the mood or struggle lost.
Set around the time of Shackleton the similaraties are unmistakable (although shackleton had an altogeter happier ending), a must read for any adventure fan, at the end of the day if Albanov had been British he would have been up there with with Sott Shacklton and co, as one of the great polar journeys ever told.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it!, 29 Jan 2004
If I had not had the book recommended I would have put it down after the first couple of chapters, but if you stick with it the second half of the book is an absolute masterpiece, the first 150 pages drag but this all changes to a story of human endurance and courage (think 1/2 Papillon 1/2 Great escape) when the hero of the book is captured by the gestapo tortured almost beyond comprehnsion, then transferred to a concentration camp which he duley escapes, for anyone whos in to tales of perciverance war or just good storys it a must read.
