Daniel Shafran, Felix Gottlieb. Chopin, Schumann, &hellip ~ Shafran Daniil
Superb quality from the great Russian cellist. One item here, the Rachmaninov sonata, is available with the same cellist and a different pianist, the Russian Yakov Flier, on a Historical Russian Archives compilation (7 discs) from Brilliant Classics. Personally, I prefer the more fluid partnership with Flier, but this pairing with the highly competent Felix Gottlieb reveals other aspects of the sonata. Well worth buying even if you have the Russian Archives compilation.
Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing sound, 24 Feb 2014
For its time (1958-1962), this is a wonderful feat of sound recording. Also includes great performances, of historical interest -- but more importantly, of superb musical quality.
Russian Writers on Translation: An Anthology by Brian James Baer
5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful survey, 24 Feb 2014
For an accessible picture of how translation functions in a different literary culture, this concise but copious compilation is a highly rewarding.
