On The Road Synopsis: Based on autobiographical details, Sam Riley plays Sal Paradise who is based on Jack Kerouac and Garrett Hedlund plays Dean Moriarty who is based on Neal Cassady. Sal/Jacks father dies and he finds a male role-model in Dean/Neal. They go on a series of road trips, meet a cavalcade of pretentious eccentrics and mild hilarity ensues.

Walter Salles has done a good job making rather insufferable unlikeable characters as interesting as possible. Based on the overrated beat novel, it could have done with a more experimental touch. Salles is a safe pair of hands and the casting is pretty good. Kristen Stewart always looks stoned, so her role couldn't have been much… Read more

Williams is finding the bland chicken-cooking hubbie Rogan dull compared to the neighbour, the hipster loser with a rickshaw business. So a slow temptation ensues to re-heat the suburban boredom.

The film has an unpromising start, the unlikely coincidence of meeting the neighbour at a tourist event? A faux romantic kismet? Feels a little too far-fetched for the old cliche of coveting thy neighbours 'ass'. I presume it's shorthand to establish a relationship. Coincidences happen in real life, but look too contrived in a movie. It tries to maintain a naturalistic air, the characters are flawed and ordinary, but this results in familiar characters that are somewhat dull… Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A Doctors Dilemma, 21 Feb 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A Tale about Barbara (lone) Wolff, a doctor in East Germany in 1980. An insular and guarded person, under constant observation by the Police. She is calm and icy, much like the movie. She is analytical and practical, but shows an unexpected sensitivity to her patients.

Her dilemma: Should she choose a gilded cage in West Germany with a marriage to her lover, or find freedom in her dedication to her patients. It also helps to have a good looking and dedicated East German doctor to tempt her to stay. The romantic aspect is a weak aspect, as she's such an independent strong woman who never needs a man to define her. A tale about where you find freedom and a meaningful life, through… Read more
