With so many horror films adopting the found footage format in recent years, including the American remake of [Rec] itself (Quarantine), it may be hard to be convinced that this small Spanish contribution to the genre is worth your time. However, not only is [Rec] leaps and bounds above the American counterpart, it is a superior film in a genre that has become plagued by cheap scares and annoying characters.

Where [Rec] really succeeds is through the sense of self awareness it has. The plot, characters and situation are wonderfully simple, and this adds to the unique sense of realism that the film has. The focus is not on characterisation and yet through subtle mannerisms and… Read more

When Ryan Gosling teamed up with Nicholas Winding Refn in 2011's "Drive", they set the hearts of critics and audiences alike racing. However, "Drive" is not exactly a Nicholas Winding Refn film, not truly.

Only God Forgives however, is the definition of a Nicholas Winding Refn movie, joining the hyper-reality likes of Refn's more recent films such as Bronson and Valhalla Rising. Both Bronson and Valhalla Rising can easily be described as "love them or hate them" films, and Only God Forgives is no different.

The camera pans inch by inch down barely lit corridors, attractive people stare into space or glare into the camera for what feels like minutes, violence arrives… Read more
