Despite Creative's usual attempts to force at least 10 useless pieces of resources-hogging software, setting this card up is relatively simple. Once you configure the speakers through the console launcher, the sound quality is great.

HOWEVER. Before purchasing, be aware:

1) There are always going to be issues when sending a lot of high-quality audio data down a USB cable. For me and many, many other users, this manifested as a constant, infuriating crackling as the computer struggled to keep up. If you can learn to ignore it, I guess you're OK. I couldn't. This is a nice book for an area of design that's often neglected - the production stages.

It's very easy to spend all your design time on the computer now and not give much thought to how your design is going to come out.

This book covers everything you need to know on the practical side - paper formats, qualities, thicknesses and sizes, image types, colour channels, practical typography (kerning, leading, baselines, runaround), colours (pantone and spot), scanning, overprinting, bleed, registration, trim, gatefolds, printing methods, binding, embossing, debossing, folding, trimming, laminating, and so on and on.

This was on the reading list for my course at the London College of Communication, so I thought I'd have a look.

It's a very nicely designed and laid out book (a common feature with this publisher I think). It offers a lot of insight into researching visually - something that I, as someone without an arts background, often find difficult to understand.

It's helped me develop a methodology for research - rather than just jumping blindly into a project and hoping for inspiration and ideas to hit me. This book is all about a structured approach to gathering visual material and analysing it, and using that research and analysis to overcome design problems.
