The Cloud Roads (The Books of the Raksura) by Martha Wells

How great to see the start of another Martha Wells' series. She eschews the cliches of fantasy in both plot and characterisation and, in doing so, keeps you guessing as to where the story's going; a refreshing change from much of the current fantasy market. Her world-building is worthy of special mention; detailed, intricate and robust. No cod medieval borrowing here. She peoples the world with a large cast of well-realised characters and handles them deftly, never losing sight of her protagonist, Moon. I understand there are further books in the pipeline and, having enjoyed this one tremendously, I shall definitely be reading the following ones.

Huron's first album Cheyne Stoking was excellent and this one continues the trend. Amongst a fine selection of tracks, the standouts for me were Blood In Blood Out and the simply superb Eternal Sea Part I. Huron's music is visceral, exciting and powerful yet doesn't sacrifice subtlety or melody in achieving this. Their albums are great but, wow, I'd love to see them live.

The cover is well made, comfortable in the hand, solid without being cumbersome. It is also attractive. The Kindle fits securely inside, with easy access to all those important little buttons. It's as pleasing to handle as a real hardback book - all it lacks is that comforting scent of old paper but, hey, you can't have everything. I'm very pleased with it and, if you want… Read more
