Great variety of styles here that range from Jazz, Bossa Nova, Soul and Funk - but don't let that mix of different styles deter you from investigating further!
HERBIE MANN AT THE VILLAGE GATE (1961) is a superb 'live' recording with three extended instrumental jams all led by Herbie on flute and backed by an very fine band.
DO THE BOSSA NOVA WITH HERBIE MANN (1962) was recorded in Rio De Janeiro with the greatest Bossa Nova players of the day, and it sounds like it too! Got this superb value for money 5CD box recently and it's worth the price alone just to get hold of a copy of the Meters magnificent Rejuvenation. The LP was originally released in 1974.
There's plenty of wonderful tracks too on Cabbage Alley (1972).
Fire On The Bayou (1975) includes, among other gems, the delightful guitar led instrumental, Middle of The Road.
There is evidence of disco vibes throughout both Trick Bag (1976) & New Directions (1977) but don't let that inevitable musical direction taken by the band deter anyone familiar with previous Meters albums form investigating. When this box set arrived it was the blue tinted edition as opposed to the blue tinted one as advertised (see images for the different coloured boxes).
Much to my surprise all 5 CDs are remastered editions.
The CD front sleeves are reproduced from the originals. The back sleeves are not reproduced from the originals and have instead an easy to read track listing and the following helpful information:
